Making your home more accessible by implementing elements of universal design is a smart idea, especially if you plan on aging in place or you have anyone living at home that is physically limited or mobility challenged. However, there’s a common misconception that focusing on improving accessibility tends to damage the style of your home, since universal design is function over form. This isn’t necessarily true. Even though universal design does focus on function, that doesn’t mean you can’t add a bit of style as well. For example, when installing an accessible shower, there’s no reason there can’t be a balance between form and function.
